Modern Wushu
Modern Wushu is an exhibition and full contact sport created by the People’s Republic of China in the late 1950s as an effort to standardize Chinese martial arts. Wushu can improve one’s physical fitness, flexibility, coordination, as well as build confidence and self-esteem. Different aspects of Wushu we practice are: solo practice, group practice, weapon practice, and free sparring, to name a few. We teach the following styles in our Modern Wushu class:
Changquan (Long Fist), originally a term to refer to styles found in northern China, modern Long Fist has the characteristics of Chaquan, Huaquan, and Shaolin Boxing. Long Fist is open and graceful, agile and quick. Actors like Jacky Wu, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen practiced modern Long Fist.
Nanquan (Southern Fist), originally a term to refer to styles found in southern China, modern Nanquan has the characteristics of the five major families of southern styles: Hong, Cai, Liu, Li, Mo. Southern fist emphasises a strong stance and steady footwork with a strong “bridge” (forearm).
Taijiquan (Tai Chi), a martial art known for soft and gentle movements, there are five major families of Tai Chi (Chen, Yang, Wu, Hao, Sun), with Yang family Tai Chi being the most widely practiced. It helps with improving balance and reducing stress.

Sanda, (Originally Sanshou) is a modern creation based on the tradition of Chinese martial arts. It was created as a full contact competition event in the 1988 International Wushu Festival. Athletes use techniques like punching (Da), kicking (Ti), and wrestling (Shuai).

Traditional Wushu
We also offer traditional forms of Chinese martial art practice, currently we are teaching Bajiquan. Nicknamed “bodyguard style,” Bajiquan is a direct, no-nonsense style, used by the bodyguards of Mao Zedong, Chiang Kai-shek, and Puyi, the last emperor of China. Our Bajiquan comes from Huo Diange, the first student of “God Spear” Li Shuwen, 9th Generation Bajiquan master. It is most famous for its elbow attack, and its use in movies like The Grandmaster (2012) or video games like Virtual Fighter’s Akira Yuki.
